UnclaimedWatch work splits into two very different jobs, and it helps to know which one you need before you walk in. The quick jobs are a battery, a crystal, a bracelet sized or a clasp replaced; most of the 84 jewelers and watchmakers listed above do these while you wait. The slow job is a movement service: the watch is opened, the movement stripped, cleaned, oiled, worn parts replaced, reassembled, regulated and pressure-tested. That takes days to weeks and belongs with a watchmaker, not a counter. The Seybold Building has the deepest bench of independent watchmakers in South Florida; the Aventura and Boca Raton exchanges add dealers and repair benches, and Bal Harbour Shops and the Design District hold the brand boutiques.
If the watch is still under the maker's warranty, use an authorized service center; independent work can void it. Outside the warranty you have a real choice. Authorized centers use only factory parts and factory procedures, and charge accordingly, with turnaround measured in weeks or months. Independent watchmakers in the Seybold Building, several of them factory-trained, can service the same movements, often faster and for less, and will tell you whether a part is original. For a vintage watch the independent route is frequently the better one, because a factory service may replace a dial or hands that collectors would rather keep.
A serious bench writes an intake receipt with the brand, model, reference and serial number, the condition of the case, dial and crystal, and what you are asking for. Photograph the watch, front and back, before you leave it. For anything of value, insist on the estimate in writing and on a pressure test after any work that opened the case; a watch that was water-resistant when it came in should be water-resistant when it goes out.
Either at an authorized Rolex service center, which is the right choice for a watch still under warranty, or at one of the independent, often factory-trained watchmakers in the Seybold Building downtown, who service the same movements and usually quote faster turnaround. Ask which parts are original and get the estimate in writing.
Most makers suggest a full service roughly every five to ten years, sooner if the watch runs fast or slow, stops, or has taken water. A battery watch simply needs a new cell every two to five years, with the seals checked at the same time.
Yes, at most of the benches listed here. Ask whether the price includes checking the seals and a pressure test; on a water-resistant watch that is the part that matters.
Yes, if the bench does the basics: a written intake receipt with the serial number and condition, an estimate before work starts, and a service warranty. Photograph the watch before you leave it, and ask for replaced parts back.
Several of the Seybold Building benches specialize in vintage and discontinued movements, and will preserve original dials and hands where a factory service might replace them. Say up front that you want originality preserved.
Yes. BizakAid, Bizak & Co.'s mail-in service, quotes from a photo, sends a prepaid insured kit, and returns the watch insured; its published watch repair pricing starts at $150.
